who is ophelia
who is ophelia
OPHELIA IS MY EXAMPLE
When I think of famous archetypes of female characters that have had their power taken away from them, to then suffer such ill fate, one of the damsels that comes to mind is that of Ophelia from William Shakespears, Hamlet.
Ophelia has no control over her mind, body and soul, she is immersed in her relationships, she doesn't think for herself.
Too many women of all ages are suffering the same fate.
Her death expresses the danger of reducing an individual
and disregarding the voice of the marginalised.
Hamlet..
Ophelia is Hamlet's partner, the daughter of Polonius and sister of Laertes.
A young, innocent and helpless woman, lacking the cunning and political awareness of other characters in the play.
She exhibits a strong tendency to obey and follow the instructions of her loved ones, which leads to her vulnerability and manipulative abuse by others.
Ophelia's fragile mental state becomes increasingly evident as the play progresses. She is deeply affected by the actions and madness of those around her.
Ophelia suffered the loss of support systems. Her father, Polonius, is killed by Hamlet, and her brother, Laertes, leaves Denmark.
With the absence of her family members, Ophelia is left in a state of grief, isolated and without guidance, further contributing to her mental and emotional breakdown.
Ophelia's character embodies an idealised image of femininity and represents the traditional expectations still placed upon many women in society. Her submissive nature and treatment as an object by the male characters highlight the oppressive nature of the patriarchal society in which she lives.
Hamlet's rejection and subsequent cruel treatment of Ophelia contribute to her emotional turmoil, ultimately leading to the loss of self and her tragic fate.
I wonder how many of us can relate to her character. I certainly do.
BUT WHAT IF..
Imagine Ophelia had a moment of Divine Intervention..
“Ophelia, you need to reclaim your agency”
WHAT EXACTLY DOES THAT MEAN?
To "reclaim her agency" means that Ophelia would regain control over her own choices, actions, and decisions. It involves asserting her autonomy and taking an active role in shaping her life, free from the constraints and influences of others.
Reclaiming agency means recognising and asserting one's own power and ability to make independent, self-directed choices. In the context of Ophelia's transformation, reclaiming agency would involve breaking free from the expectations, manipulations, and limitations imposed upon her by society, her family, and other characters in the play.
It means no longer being passive or submissive, but rather asserting her own desires, needs, and aspirations.
Ophelia would become an active participant in her own life, making decisions that align with her own values, goals, and well-being.
Reclaiming agency also implies taking responsibility for one's own actions and choices, and accepting the consequences that come with them.
It involves recognising and honouring one's own worth, voice, and personal power.
By reclaiming her agency, Ophelia would become a self-determined individual, empowered to shape her own destiny and assert herself in the world around her.
AND SO..
I think we can all relate to Ophelia's character, at least in one way - myself, all the ways.
If Ophelia could re-write her own story, I wonder what aspects she would change about her character, so as to not suffer such an unfortunate fate.
If Ophelia were to rise from the ashes and empower herself, transforming her life, it would involve several key changes and developments.
Here's a hypothetical vision of what that transformation might look like:
Self-Discovery and Individuality:
Ophelia would embark on a journey of self-discovery, reclaiming her individuality and finding her own voice. She would break free from the constraints imposed by society and the expectations of others, allowing her true self to emerge.
Education and Intellectual Growth:
Ophelia would recognise the importance of education and intellectual growth. She would engage in learning, expanding her knowledge and critical thinking abilities. This newfound intellectual prowess would empower her to navigate complex situations and make informed decisions.
Assertiveness and Self-Advocacy:
Ophelia would develop a sense of assertiveness, advocating for her own needs, desires, and aspirations. She would no longer passively accept the commands and manipulations of others. Instead, she would assert herself in relationships and actively communicate her thoughts and feelings.
Emotional Resilience and Healing:
Ophelia would embark on a journey of emotional resilience and healing. She would seek support from trusted confidants or professional counsellors to process her grief, trauma, and emotional turmoil. This process would enable her to regain stability and regain control over her emotions.
Independence and Autonomy:
Ophelia would strive for independence and autonomy, both personally and socially. She would develop her own goals, dreams, and aspirations, separate from the expectations and influence of others. This newfound independence would allow her to make choices that align with her own desires and values.
Empowerment and Activism:
Ophelia would find empowerment through activism and championing causes close to her heart. She would use her voice to speak out against societal injustices, particularly those that oppress women. Through her activism, she would inspire others and work towards creating a more equitable and inclusive society.
Rebuilding Relationships:
Ophelia would work on rebuilding and fostering healthy relationships. She would surround herself with supportive individuals who respect her newfound empowerment and contribute positively to her growth. This might include reconciling with her brother Laertes and forging new connections based on mutual respect and understanding.
Redefining Love and Romance:
Ophelia would redefine her understanding of love and romance, seeking relationships that are based on equality, respect, and shared values. She would prioritise her own well-being and choose partners who appreciate and support her empowerment journey.
This alternative trajectory envisions Ophelia as a resilient, empowered and independent woman who reclaims her agency and advocates for herself and others. Through her transformation, she becomes an inspiring figure, breaking free from the tragic fate that befell her in the original play.

I wonder if we all followed this advice..
We could resurrect ourselves, along with Ophelia!
